For some time, conservatives have demanded mass deportation and heavy border regulation. Peggy Noonan's response to the new immigration bill is that "Bush has torn the conservative coalition asunder."

When did conservatives become so powerless and concerned with our nation's problems instead of effectively, happily coming across as the problem-solvers? You tore yourself from your principles, and now you are suffering the consequences. It's simple.
When you market your work skills, you're persuasive. When you're marketing your politics, you're a hardball. You're not building support for Reagan's ideas anymore.
You aren't conservatives. You're the generation that conservative ideas persuaded to vote republican, and now you don't know what to do. So you do what the liberals do: attack, demand, and attack again. Stupid kids!
I am conservative, and my attack on your immigration position is
where do you get the authority to regulate the free migration of individuals? You have no argument, no good ideas. Nothing will satisfy you but power to control who goes in and out of this country, and I oppose that.
If you had any principles, you would realize that such regulation is in the spirit of the New Deal, which conservatism is opposed to. Don't be a liberal and call yourself a conservative. You're wrong. If you control the borders, you will destroy America's population.
The answer is No, stupid.
Now, take it like a grown man or woman. Obsessing over the government's every move is only going to turn you into a micromanager. Our government is so friggin big, that any change in its policy is likely to cause unintended consequences due to the nature of the relationships between federal and state agencies.
Look at the impossible job government has: protecting America from terrorists, maintaining an international military stalemate, protecting Iraq, providing a fair system of justice, and respecting individual rights. Government's performance depends on the decision-making of tens of thousands of men and women. As you can tell, fallible people do not make perfect decisions. And why should they?
I don't envy Bush's job, but if I had it...
I would sit down with conservatives and liberals, letting them give me their opinions. Knowing they would argue, I would act surprised. I'd say, "We've got a bigger problem than this issue. You two don't agree, and each of you wants me to support one against the other. This country is divided against itself. I can't be of two minds to do this job.
The wisest thing for me to do is nothing until you two agree."
You'd all hate me then...because I'd force~ you to form a relationship. Neither of you want that. Conservatives and liberals want their way, and that's that. Screw you if you belong to the other side. Screw you if you don't want freedom from the other party. And screw you if you want to "educate" me, as if my decisions aren't perfect for 300 million people.
Stupid kids.
As if we don't all know how that would turn out. Public spotlight would be on you two arguing back and forth...with me pulling a Solomon. Turn by turn, individuals would reveal how little they care about this country, and public opinion would be swayed against them. I would make this event a weekly spectactle, so all my 300 million bosses could see for themselves why stupid people argue over nothing.
Eventually the message would get around: Daddy knows better.
You people don't have the will to do such a thing. That's what makes me unique. Oh you're all proud people. You couldn't possibly stand to hear the other side's accusations and demands one more time.
And yet, what else would win more people to your side?
Daddy knows better.
